Happy New Millennium!.  (I bet you thought that was all over with.)  I hope that 2000 is off to a good start for all of you.  New Year's is always a time to reflect as well as to plan.  I asked if anyone had any thoughts about the calendar change to share with the class, and only one person replied.  Heather Hessel shared these thoughts:

"For those of you who haven't yet made New Year's resolutions...

I was talking to someone recently who decided that this year he was going to add something to his life as a New Year's resolution. So often we think that resolutions have to be those directives that take something away from us and from our enjoyment of life, but they can also be used to increase our connections with friends, relatives, and our community. I normally don't make a New Year's resolution, but this year I decided to pay particular attention to reaching out and communicating more with friends and relatives. When you think about how you want to improve your life through 2000, consider focusing on a positive attribute rather than a negative one."

I have to agree with Heather; New Year's resolutions don't have to be about giving up bad habits, or losing weight.  I  look at it as a time to set goals for myself; these can be things I want to accomplish in the year (like a couple of year's ago when my resolution was to find a new job); or about things I want to incorporate into my life (like volunteering time to a worthy cause).  And I leave you with a little prayer that I think incorporates the idea of resolving to improve oneself.

"Dear Father, help me this year.... to be glad of life, because it gives me the chance to love and to work and to play and to look up at the stars; to be satisfied with my possessions, but not contented with myself until I have made the best of them; to covet nothing that is my neighbor's except his kindness of heart and gentleness of manners; to think seldom of my enemies, often of my friends and every day of Christ."

Shandoune Scott and her son Devin traveled to Europe for three weeks in August and September.  They visited England, France, and Belgium. Shandoune was quite proud of Devin, who she reports "was a great traveler for being so young".  Devin especially enjoyed the people of Belgium, while Shandoune was moved by Normandy and seeing where so many US soldiers fought and died during World War Two.  And both will always remember being left 5 hours outside of London by the tour bus and their adventure getting back.
