Laura Joseph has had a busy year. She performed her final Graduate Recital on April 11, 1999 which featured the works for harp by Thomas, de Falla, Grandjany, and Mozart. Shortly after that she got engaged to her boyfriend, Bill Hoffman. In May she graduated from the University of Redlands with a Masters of Art in Music. Laura and Bill will be traveling to Honduras in August to participate in the Maranatha church building program in La Lima. They will be there from August 1-13 and will wed on approximately August 12th in the church they help build. Laura extends an open invitation for people to assist with this worthwhile cause. To learn more about the Maranatha organization go to www.maranatha.org.  You can also read more about Laura and Bill's engagement and wedding at their wedding website.

After receipt of the last newsletter, Tamara (Rodgers) Hopton, wrote a letter the the editor to be published for the class to read and enjoy.  Tamara's desire was for the letter to be printed "as is" with revisions only to correct spelling.  Tamara's wishes have been met and the letter is posted as she wrote it. Unfortunately, due to the length, the letter is only available on the web version of the newsletter. All are encouraged to visit the website and read Tamara's letter.

Raffy Yessayan left for Lebanon in Mid July for a month long visit to his native country.  He made the arrangements without telling his mother in hopes to surprise her; he hasn't been back for well over ten years.

June Jeong also became engaged this year. She and her boyfriend Bob got engaged in February and plan to exchange vows next April 9th in San Clemente. June also recently started a new job as HR manager at Impac, a mortgage retail/wholesale lending company, and plans to start work on her MBA in Finance at La Verne University in the Fall.

Newlyweds, Mr. & Mrs. Bruce

On June 27th Julie Stewart became Mrs. John Bruce. The wedding took place in Ventura at the Ventura Seventh-Day Adventist Church. The couple honeymooned in Hawaii, visiting Mount Haleakala in Maui and Pearl Harbor in Oahu.  Earlier this year the couple bought a condo in Ventura, however they have yet to move in as they are waiting for their tenants, who are having a new house built, to move out.

Suzin (Porter) Fowler graduated from her respiratory therapist program and is currently employed as such 8-16 hours a week at Kaiser Walnut Creek.  She is also picking up other work on an on call basis.  Suzin says her husband Todd provides a steady income so that she can play when she's not working. No doubt their two kids keep Suzin busy when she's not at work.  Their oldest, Kamerin, starts kindergarten and soccer this fall. His latest and proudest achievement is learning to ride his bike without training wheels (with a bit of bribery, Suzin says).  Their daughter, Taelor started walking around objects at about 6 1/2 - 7 months of age and now, at nine months she is walking everywhere. Suzin reports that "tabs must be kept on her or she will disappear quickly, frequently with someone's drink. And Ashley, the family dog, continues to guard against evil, nosey, peeping tom neighbor lady.

Heather Hessel is off on Road Trip '99 during the month of August. She and her boyfriend will be camping in the Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, the Black Hills, and Voyageurs National Park. They will also visit Little Bighorn, Mount Rushmore, the Badlands, Bryce National Park, Zion National Park, and the Anasazi Indian Village in Utah. In the fall, she will be attending UCLA's Masters program in Library and Information Science.

Nancy Beck says that the fact that she has 31/2 year-old twins and has survived is news enough.  However, she also indicates that she is planning a 2 week trip to Hawaii next year for some rest and relaxation.

Aaron Smith says "not a whole lot going on here. Krista and I are very busy with our careers. Things are going well and we are healthy. Like I said, nothing to exciting. I miss everyone and wish the world to everybody!!!"

 Dan&Julie at the Grand Canyon

Julie (Miller) Casey and her husband, Dan, went to Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Grand Bahama Island the last week in April.  In Florida they visited Lion Country Safari (yes, there is still one and you still drive your car through), Viscaya (huge estate built by International Harvester vice president James Deering), and the Everglades.  On grand Bahama they snorkeled,  kayaked and visited beautiful white-sand beaches.  Julie and Dan also went to the Grand Canyon earlier this year, and are planning their next vacation, a trip to Cancun.

Besides traveling, Julie is staying busy with work.  She has passed two national insurance exams, and is currently studying for a third.  Julie is working toward her CPCU designation, a distinguished designation in the world of insurance.

Julie's husband, Dan, threw her a surprise birthday party for the big 3-0 on July 9th.  The party, held at a restaurant near the couple's house, was attended by several SPA classmates.

London (stock photo)

Adriana Quezada says that 1999 started off good for her; she celebrated the New Year in Boston, which she calls a "great city".  Then her love of travel took her to London in April where she visited the "absolutely beautiful" Newbold College.  According to Lana, if that bonus comes in, she's off to Buena Aries next.  Lana is working in the International Sales department for Corbis Inc., which she calls "another cool company of Bill Gates". They do stock photography on CD roms.  She says the company has a great young techie crowd into computer graphic arts. Besides working and traveling the world, Lana is living in Oceanside and is finishing up her second degree, in History.  This fall she plans to take the GMAT in preparation for an MBA in International Management.  She says to wish her luck.  Good Luck Lana!

Sherida (Braswell) Pond who is still living in Guam, will be vacationing in Washington and Minnesota this summer.  Sherida stays busy with her two children.  Her daughter will be entering second grade soon, and is in Brownies and takes swimming lessons, while her 4 year old soon keeps busy by getting dirty.  But in addition to her "mom" duties Sherida is a part-time student working on her Bachelor's in Management.  Sherida and her family, who have been in Guam since July 1996 will return to the mainland in October 2001.
